It's not exactly a lovefest.

         It's certainly a long way from the symbolism of a year authentic Carlos Ruiz jersey Cream ago. How strange.

It was a day to entertain possibilities of wider scope than anything the Marlins previously could have imagined.

 Ramirez responded immediately by being named Player of the Month in the National League last June, and finished the season with career-best numbers in home runs (33), on-base percentage (.400) and slugging percentage (.540). He batted .301 in keeping with his .308 career average.
But if anyone -- my hand is raised -- was prepared to view Ramirez as the face of the Florida franchise, it now should be regarded as premature consideration.
Ramirez himself, for example, isn't authentic Carlos Ruiz jersey Grey making that assumption.
"I don't think of it that way," Ramirez said at his locker in the Marlins clubhouse before Tuesday night's 7-0 loss to Cincinnati. "It's a business. I'm happy my family is set for a long time. It's not going to change how I play baseball."

But he wasn't gleeful, either.
He's only 25 years old.
       But when Ramirez mentioned his dreams for a long career, he didn't say he hopes he'll forever wear a Marlins uniform. That's business, too, of course, and neither did Ramirez, to be fair, say he doesn't want Carlos Ruiz official jersey to be a career Marlin.
But any sense of real affection seems to be lacking, and from management's side as well.
"A face of a franchise is developed, not anointed," said Marlins President David Samson. "It's not a title easily given; it's earned.

Doesn't sound as though the Marlins are all that interested in campaigning for Ramirez as the player with whom they are most identified. That has been standard procedure for the franchise bosses.
But, again, how strange in this particular case.
Ramirez, after all, widely is considered to be a player who might someday win a Most Valuable Player award. He frequently is mentioned as one of the game's Customized Philadelphia Phillies Jersey young stars around which a franchise could be built, and the Marlins still might go that route.
Ramirez, though, did sign a heavily back-loaded deal -- approximately two-thirds of the money is due across the final three years of the contract -- and it was Larry Beinfest, who's in charge of baseball operations, who once said the agreement "is about 2012, 2013 and 2014."
The pertinent parallel there is that the Marlins are scheduled to be in their new digs on Opening Day of 2012.
What are the chances Ramirez won't be there with them? That's a $70 million question, and a reasonable guess is that it's nothing more than an even-odds proposition that Ramirez will be a Marlin in three years.
The team's history is that it rids itself of its best players when they are deemed to have become too expensive, and there will be ready buyers aplenty should Ramirez ever authentic Brad Lidge jersey Grey hit the market.
A year ago, the Ramirez deal was presumed to be a legitimization of the Marlins' intention to become more serious in building a roster not rooted in a lowest-possible-payroll philosophy.
It was supposed to represent a significant commitment to a player by an ownership group long hesitant to take such a step.
It was presented as a franchise willing to link Ramirez to a new stadium and a bright future.
A year ago, it was a celebration ... a lovefest.
Now, not so much.
